When
Lorenzo Ford arrived at Camp Copass in Denton, Jeff Dooley, shown here with
his wife Faunda, was the first person he met. The couple invited him to
their church, and arranged for him to have a cellphone. A social worker
with a master’s degree, Lorenzo was better prepared than most to establish
a new life in Texas. He was offered a job with Joyce Ann Brown’s nonprofit,
helping other evacuees, and is planning to move to Dallas. “Denton
was a blessing,” says Lorenzo now. “It’s time for other
doors to open.”
