Four months before Katrina hit, Hilda Hendricks and her husband had finally finished paying off old debts. Hendricks is overcome with the stress of wanting to go home while being pressured to sign a six-month lease for an apartment in Denton. If they don’t sign, they are told they’ll need to leave the complex altogether. “This is a fearful time,” she says. “The only thing stable in our life right now is ourselves.”
