We live in an era of:

suicide bombers

cloned animals

smart bombs

mapping the genome

good vs. evil

global warming

biological warfare

global terrorism

AIDS

etc.

Perhaps it is time for us to stop thinking that we are making progress.
Perhaps we are doing something wrong.
Globalization may not have been such a good idea.
The Berlin Wall fell not long before the Twin Towers.
We have no leadership.
Long-standing treaties are being broken.
New ones on global warming and the international criminal court are not being signed.
The French have a new 35-hour work week.
Southern Africa is being decimated by AIDS.
Prisoners are being held without trial in Guantanamo Bay.

And where is the media in all this?

Consolidating, merging, creating new "reality" shows as if there is not more than enough reality to go around.
Marshall McLuhan once stated, "We are going ninety miles per hour while looking through the rearview mirror."
Perhaps it is truer to say that "We are going at warp speed into oblivion while those in power drive so fast that the rest of us don't even know the name of the road we're on."

Columbus, of course, was wrong; the world is flat, and it feels like we are very near the edge.
