Navigating the Photo Essay
This photo essay, with narrative by the photographer, attempts to provide choices of information and experiences similar to those encountered by journalists during the last weeks of the siege of Sarajevo. The reader can go to photographs of the suburbs -- Vogosca, Ilidza, Ilijas, Grbavica -- to see the sometimes violent exodus of the Serbs, then visit Sarajevo's center as the city began, for the first time in four years, to shift back to an awkward normality, freed from sniping and shelling. The essay is structured as a linear narrative with elaboration or "mini-tours" available at several points. One way to navigate the site, providing a complete tour including deeper levels, is by clicking on any picture. Other choices are available by using the following links in the toolbar.
