For 35 years after World War II, Tito was the leader and unifying force of Yugoslavia. At a 1950 festival in Petrovec, a Slovak settlement 40 miles northwest of Belgrade, the Yugoslav capital, a picture of Tito was prominently displayed by members of a youth group.
